HOW TO WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT?

We all have heard the term “thesis” at least once in our life. The thing that immediately pops out in our minds is the thesis, which is the last paper of the academics for final year students in graduation. A thesis is a very long periodic study, a well-written paper covering vast topics, and it takes about a couple of years to put together. But here, we will discuss where the thesis statement is most commonly found in essays.

A thesis statement is found everywhere: a debate, a news article, a blog on any topic, a legal notice, or even an advertisement. Without a proper thesis statement, the whole matter is unclear, blurry, is not focused, falls flat, and cannot inspire and excite the reader to read. Thus, writing a good strong thesis statement is very important. So, how to write a strong thesis statement? Well, we will discuss that in detail with examples of thesis statements.

The thesis statement is a sentence that ties together the main argument. It can be a couple of lines taking the whole scope of the matter together, clearly stating the point and standing on the topic and discussion. It’s a statement summarising the topic and declaring your position on it.

Thesis statement examples are: “Electric and CNG cars are the alternative future of Indian automobile industry.

TYPES OF THESIS STATEMENTS

There are two types of thesis statements, informative and persuasive. An informative thesis statement should be used only in an informative essay where information is given on a topic without taking a side or stance and not in a persuasive or argumentative essay and vice-versa. PhD thesis statement writing is no exception, as strong thesis writing creates more credibility.

The two types of thesis statements are :

Informative: An informative thesis statement is just a sentence to inform or educate on a particular topic without taking a side or stand, to simply inform about the focused topic and its scope that the paper covers.

Informative thesis statement examples: CNG cars are slowly increasing market share as alternatives to high priced non-renewable fuel cars as they are cost-effective and zero-emission.

In the above thesis topic, the reader gets the topic (CNG cars) and the direction of the essay (describing how and why they are increasing market share).

Persuasive: A thesis statement that mentions and takes a side on a topic and gives reasons to support its stand to argue on it are persuasive thesis statements. Whether narrative, argumentative, compare / contrast, most of the essays all use persuasive thesis statements. Whenever the thesis is not just simply to inform on a topic, the thesis statement is taken as a persuasive thesis statement.

Thesis statement examples: CNG is the best alternative to non-renewable fuel cars and is cost-effective.

In this persuasive thesis statement, I mentioned taking a stance and position (it’s the best alternative) and mentioning my opinion. Next, I have to give valid, true reasons supporting my stance on the topic. This type of persuasive thesis statement can be used in essays containing writers’ opinions, contrast essays, compare or narrative essays.

STYLES OF THESIS STATEMENT

There are two types of thesis statement styles.

The narrow style: The first thesis statement style contains a narrow topic and subject scope with a list of two or more points summarized in a sentence. This thesis statement style is perfect for a brief essay having two to three body paragraphs usually used in middle and higher schools.

Example: CNG is a good alternative to non-renewable fuels.

Here the subject is narrowed down and focused on (CNG fuel) only as an alternative to non-renewable fuel, whereas there is a lot more alternative fuel in the market, such as electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel. Thus, it decreases the scope of writing and is best suited for a brief three body paragraph.

The wide style: The second thesis statement style contains a much wider and vast, open and versatile subject to write upon and is best suited for long essays of five to six pages or more for college and other uses. Instead of a couple of points narrowed down, it contains an engulfing topic that comprises all.

Example: Alternatives fuels to non-renewable ones.

This topic does not narrow down only one particular alternative fuel available in the market. It takes all the alternative fuels available in the market such as electric, hybrid, hydrogen, etc., thus giving a versatile and wide topic to write upon for longer essays.

QUALITIES OF THESIS STATEMENTS

To write a strong thesis statement, one must also know the qualities of a strong thesis statement. Some of the qualities of a strong thesis statement are the length of the thesis, the position of the thesis and the strength of the thesis.

Length: The length of the thesis depends on the number of points mentioned in the thesis, which makes it small or long in length. A strong thesis statement should not be more than 30-40 words written in 2 lines in a concise brief sentence. It should contain two clauses, one the independent clause (the topic) and the other dependent clause (the reason).

Strength: the strength of the thesis statement depends on the how persuasive topic it is an arguable the thesis topic is. It should never be a weak topic that everyone easily agrees upon as true; it should be argumentative. The more arguable the thesis statement is, the stronger the thesis is.

Example of weak thesis:

Electric vehicles (EVs) are easy on the pocket to run and earth-friendly with zero emissions.

This is a true fact that everyone will agree upon easily as EVs are electric power-charged vehicles that are affordable and cost-effective to run and are zero-emissions that do not add to the earth’s global warming.

Example of strong thesis:

EVs are the complete and best alternative to non-renewable fueled vehicles.

Now, this thesis statement is not one on which every one will easily agree upon and is a debatable one as EVs have a limited range to run on one full charge, it will require charging on the road after that, but we still don’t have charging points or kiosks on-road, and it will take longer to build that EV infrastructure. EVs are difficult to maintain as well as is difficult to find authorized service yet on the road and will be costly.

Position: The position of the thesis statement at the beginning of the essay is vital as it makes the reader understand the topic clearly and early what the writer is going to discuss. The thumb rule of a strong thesis statement position is in the introductory paragraph strictly in the last two-three lines.

FORMULA FOR A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT

Apart from the types and qualities for a strong thesis statement there is fixed format templates to have a good start. They are:

Templates for thesis with two or more reasons:

____________is true because of_________, _________ and ________.

Templates with one reason:

_________is true because of __________.

A good amount of thought and time should be given to composing a strong thesis statement. It summarizes the whole argument into concise sentences, making the topic strong, focused, and well-directed. These were some of the topics everyone should follow and keep in mind while writing any thesis statements, even PhD thesis statements.
